Field Recording

Field recording is the capture of sound outside the controlled environment of a studio, on location in the places where sounds naturally occur.[1] It is used to gather authentic material such as vehicles, weapons, wildlife, weather, and the character of specific environments, often with portable, high resolution equipment.

Recording in the field introduces challenges like wind, unwanted background noise, and unpredictable events, so it rewards careful technique and patience. The original recordings it produces become valuable source material that sound designers edit and layer into finished effects and ambiences.[2]
