Sound Editing

Sound editing is the assembly, cleaning, and organization of recorded audio into the tracks that make up a soundtrack.[1] Editors select and place dialogue, effects, and ambiences, remove unwanted noises, and align every element precisely to picture so the material is ready to mix.

Much of the craft is invisible, since a well edited track sounds natural and continuous even though it may be built from many separate recordings. The editor's organization of those elements into clearly labeled tracks and stems is also what allows the final mix to proceed efficiently.[2]
