Music Direction

Music direction is the leadership of the musical side of a production, setting the interpretation, tempo, and overall sound and making sure every musical contribution serves a single coherent vision.[1] The music director communicates intent to composers, arrangers, and performers, and acts as the point of decision when musical and production priorities have to be reconciled.

In practice the role spans planning, rehearsal, and the recording or performance itself, and it often includes conducting or cueing players, approving arrangements, and shaping balance and dynamics. On screen and stage projects the music director works closely with directors and editors so that the music aligns with pacing, dialogue, and the emotional arc of the piece.[2]
