Ensemble Recording
Ensemble recording captures a group of musicians performing together as a unit, such as a string quartet, a brass section, or a chamber group.[1] The goal is to preserve the blend, balance, and interaction that the players create in the room, which means microphone placement is chosen to capture both individual lines and the collective sound.
Engineers commonly combine main pickup microphones that record the ensemble as a whole with closer spot microphones that reinforce individual instruments. This layered approach keeps the natural cohesion of the ensemble while still giving the mix some control over internal balance and detail.[2]
