Procedural Mixing

Procedural mixing is an approach to interactive audio in which the balance of a mix is driven by rules and game state in real time, rather than being fixed in advance. The system continuously decides what should be prominent, for example lowering ambience and music when important dialogue or alerts occur, so the mix stays clear no matter what the player does.

This requires defining priorities, ducking behaviors, and dynamic level relationships that respond to context as it changes. The result is a mix that manages itself moment to moment, keeping the most important sounds audible across the countless situations an interactive scene can produce.[1]
