Foley

Foley is the live performance of everyday sound effects in a studio, recorded in sync to picture to replace or enhance sounds that were not captured well during filming.[1] Named after the sound artist Jack Foley, the craft covers footsteps, cloth movement, and the handling of props, all performed by artists who watch the picture and match the action.

Because these sounds are tailored to each shot, Foley gives a soundtrack a human, tactile quality that library effects often cannot match. It also supports localization, since a fully built Foley track lets a film be re-voiced in other languages without losing its everyday sounds.[2]
